Total Car Score Names The Top 10 Best American Cars: Cadillac CTS Earns Top Spot

LOS ANGELES, June 27, 2012 - Total Car Score (www.totalcarscore.com), the most comprehensive automotive ranking and comparison website, announced today the 10 Best American Cars for 2012. This year's top spot goes to the 2012 Cadillac CTS luxury sedan.

As the nation prepares to mark Independence Day, Total Car Score's list of the 10 Best American Cars reflects the strength and quality of the domestic auto industry. The rankings represent nearly every category of car, including luxury sedans and SUVs as well as crossovers and large wagons.

Karl Brauer, editor in chief and CEO of Total Car Score, and a veteran industry observer, commented on the rankings:

"The Detroit Big 3 have quickly rebounded to produce some of the highest rated cars on the market, and America clearly hasn't lost its grip on the large SUV or high-performance sedan segments. All three manufacturers made the Top 10 list with at least one 'tuner' version of their mainstream sedans, confirming Detroit muscle is alive and well.

"Kudos to Cadillac for earning the top spot with its CTS luxury sedan, the Top Scoring domestic model on the market. General Motors also captured six of the Top 10 spots with hits from Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and a total of three Cadillac models. Ford's Taurus SHO and Flex represent the Blue Oval's best, while two versions of Chrysler's venerable 300 sedan confirm its continued appeal."

"It's worth noting that while no compact domestic models made the list, Ford's 2012 Focus was less than half a point behind the 300 SRT8," Brauer added. "With a growing emphasis on small cars and high fuel efficiency, it's likely we'll see a domestic economy car in next year's Top 10 Best American Cars list."

Total Car Score allows car buyers and enthusiasts alike to compare vehicles quickly and easily across all automotive segments. The "Total Car Score" is one comprehensive number assigned to a vehicle that represents an overall industry assessment from major automotive authorities. All vehicles are model year 2012 with at least five source ratings that comprise the Total Car Score.

In a nod to the red white and blue, here are the 10 Best American Cars from Total Car Score.

The 2013 Cadillac XTS shows off at the PGA Cadillac Championship

The 2013 Cadillac XTS will serve as the flagship General Motors luxury sedan, effectively replacing the DTS and STS and to show the cargo carrying capabilities of the new full sized sedan, the company announced that the new XTS can hold four full sized golf bags and four adults in the pinnacle of American luxury.

When the folks at General Motors were designing the new Cadillac XTS, they studied the wants and needs of luxury sedan buyers and the common key was cargo space.

“We used computer simulations to model golf bags, as well as other common types of goods our customers are likely to transport,” said XTS chief engineer Sheri Hickok. “That also includes cases of bottled water, luggage, groceries and more. Just as we did with the rest of the XTS, we spent a lot of time maximizing every inch of storage space.”

The Cadillac engineers found that golf clubs were a common fixture among luxury car owners and since golf is often played in fours – GM made sure that a foursome could ride in style to the golf course with their golf clubs tucked away in the trunk. Many luxury sedans will fit four adults comfortably or fit four golf bags with the seats folded down but using the interior compartment for additional cargo space obviously cuts down on the number of adults who can be seated in the car. The XTS combines 40 inches of rear leg room with a whopping 18 cubic feet of trunk space – more room for golf bags than you will find in the Audi A8L (long wheelbase), the BMW 7 Series or the Mercedes Benz S-Class according to GM.

“Our owners want to comfortably take four adults out for a round of golf and dinner afterwards,” said Hickok. “The challenge was to give customers what they expect in terms of interior spaciousness, comfort and luxury, but to do so without compromising exterior looks and handling dynamics.”

To show off how easily the 2013 Cadillac XTS would accommodate 4 large golf bags in the trunk, GM took a new XTS to the Cadillac Championship golf tournament this past weekend at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida. The good people at Callaway Golf provided four flashy new bags and sets of clubs while Doral golf sales manager Ryan Hershberger loaded them in without any need to force or wedge them into the trunk. “For a sedan, the room was really impressive,” Hershberger said. “It’s really convenient to fit four sets of clubs like that with no force or wedging necessary.”

It is no secret that luxury cars are a mainstay in the parking lot of golf courses around the United States so it could serve as a great marketing tool to show golfers that the new 2013 Cadillac XTS will fit three friends and their golf bags when a new buyer wants to take his buddies out for a round of golf.
Check out the video below, showing the simplicity of unloading 4 golf bags into the new Cadillac XTS!

Cadillac beats out BMW as most desired auto brand in the U.S.

Cadillac has beat out BMW to become the most-desired automotive brand in the United States by men, according to results of a market research test by Buyology Inc.

“This year’s brand ranking demonstrates that it’s essential for companies to invest in creating deeper differentiated relationships with their consumers. These relationships provide the context that either amplifies or diminishes everything the brand does to connect with its customers,” said Gary Singer, Founding Partner and CEO, Buyology Inc. “Buyology’s neuro-insight tools provide rigorous analytic measurement of these deeper, previously unmeasured, connections to provide unique insight to brands and a roadmap for how to strengthen their relationships.”

Check out more news on the Cadillac ATS.

Lexus was the only other brand to make it on Buyology’s 2012 Most Desired Brands in the U.S. – it made it to No. 7 on the women’s list.

The Most Exciting Car at the Detroit Auto Show

by Brett Berk - Vanity Fair - January 9, 2012

Cadillac's latest gem, the ATS sedan, emerges at its unveling.
Reflecting a resurgent optimism in the automotive industry, a surfeit of slaver-worthy vehicles are receiving their world premieres at this year’s North American International Auto Show, which opens to the public this weekend at Detroit’s COBO Center. BMW is showing its newest benchmark sports sedan, the 3-Series, Mercedes is unveiling the latest in its six decade-long line of grand touring roadsters in the new SL550, and Bentley is launching an “efficient” twin-turbo V-8 in its new Continental GT. Lexus and Acura are both introducing sinewy hybrid sports cars which will hopefully expunge their brand’s current bland and/or ludicrous styling language. Chevy and Ford are each set to reveal their most powerful pony cars ever, a 580 horsepower Camaro and a 650 (!) horsepower Mustang. And even Dodge has a slick new compact, the Dart, based on a platform borrowed from Alfa Romeo via their shared corporate overlord, Fiat.

But the car we are most excited about was just unmasked last night by our beloved Wreath-and-Crest brand, the one named for the weird-hatted French explorer/adventurer who founded our host (and home) city of Detroit. That’s right, ladies: it’s a Cadillac. This classy domestic manufacturer has made a remarkable comeback over the past decade, creating vehicles like the CTS coupe, sedan, and wagon that can go heel to toe with the best medium-sized vehicles from Japan and Germany, all while styled in a distinct and distinctly American sport/luxury idiom.

But Caddy hasn’t had a competitive entry-level car since…well, probably since the LaSalle, an elegant sub-brand hatched during the heady days of the roaring 20s. All that changed last night at the historic Argonaut Building—a Art Deco pile designed by famed industrial architect Albert Kahn, and listed on the National Register—when the sheets were pulled off the newest, and smallest, Cadillac, the ATS. Advancing the creasy poignard edge of the brand’s “Arts and Science” design style, but pulling the lines down and tucking them taut in a way that’s more Danish Modern than High Bauhaus, the ATS looks at once balanced and audacious, and every bit a contemporary Cadillac.

Inside, we see the usual posh leather, metals, wood, and fabrics frescoed on every surface. But there in the middle of the console—glowing like the 5000 candlepower bulb in the Manistee Lighthouse due west of namesake Cadillac, Michigan—is the bright new Cadillac User Experience (CUE). This iPad-like control center operates an advanced infotainment system that—based on our hands-on, one-on-one demonstration (with a handsome engineer)—promises to be an exceptional and transparent interface, in a market crowded with illogical and occluded ones.

We’re also revved about what’s under the hood and…whatever part of the car the transmission underpins. What we mean is, there will be an all-new, high-output, and highly efficient four cylinder turbocharged engine pumping out as much power (270 hp) to the rear wheels as the old V-6 in the CTS’s bay, and a real slick stick shift to direct its forward (and backward) progress.

When we conducted our first ever VF.com car review back in 2008, it was of then newly refreshed CTS sedan. We adored that vehicle—and still do—and even thought about buying one, but wished it was “8/10th the size and 2/10th more involved.” We think the ATS might be just that car, and then some. We look forward to putting it through our rigorous evaluation protocol when it enters our vector this coming summer. For now, we’re just content to caress it with our mind.

Orange Ice Metallic 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe

“Why would you repaint a brand new car?” Why indeed…

The 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe is a beautiful product straight from the factory and is available in 8 colors; orange not being one of them. Why would anyone want to drive a vehicle that shines as much as the sunrise over Tampa Bay? Maybe the folks at Cadillac should ask themselves that because the sparkle of the finish in the Florida sunshine draws attention wherever it goes. The Dimmitt Automotive Group has been a dealership that has always prided itself in heavy personalization of vehicles, and this project is just another example of the professional work done by the staff in Clearwater. Through bold color mixing, subtle interior touches, unique exterior selections, and body panel changes, this Coupe gives customers of the Dimmitt Automotive Group some ideas of what is possible in making their vehicle truly special.

The color had to be perfect, and our staff in the body shop nailed it. The original concept color that was discussed for the Coupe was along the lines of an orange metallic used by Lamborghini a few years back. This color seemed a little too pastel and tame, so after shooting a few samples and playing with the mixture, the hue was chosen. The body and panels were stripped and prepped for paint, as well as most of the interior trim. After a few days the results would confirm our correct choice of color – spectacular!

During the separation of interior from body, the seats, door panels, and rear interior panels were treated to a perforated leather insert from Katskin called “Barracuda”. Most of the harder interior surfaces were treated to an orange metallic finish as well. The instrument cluster sports orange LED indicators for the K40 laser/radar package that has been added.

Performance wise the 3.6 liter V6 remains stock, but has been dressed up a bit. The engine cover was treated to a splash of orange as well; topped off with a chrome Cadillac wreath and crest. The strut tower cross brace has been treated to a high polish to reflect the color of the engine cover when the hood is up.

One of the most common ways of personalizing a vehicle is changing the wheel and tire package. This proved to be one of the most difficult choices of this build. While there are many wheel options available, after a while they all start to look the same. The wheels for this project needed to be as unique as the car, so we chose a staggered fitment of 20” Motiv Motion alloys wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The wheels were refinished to match the car and the standard Cadillac CTS center caps were adapted to the wheel to finish the appearance of the wheel package.

Protecting an investment like this is necessary, so the front end is wrapped in a clear film to prevent road debris from damaging the beautiful paint. The glass is also treated with a window film to protect the interior from harmful UV damage. We want this Coupe to be shining example of unique vehicle personalization wherever it may travel!

While this Coupe did not arrive as a CTS-V model, you would not know that by looking at it. The standard front fascia, hood, and rear fascia were all removed in favor of the V bodywork. The previous generation CTS model could more easily mimic a V by installing a mesh grille and a few emblems. This generation makes the imitation a little more difficult, but not out of the realm of possibility. In adding the V front fascia, HID projector fog lamps were installed with a black mesh covering the opening for the brake cooling ducts. The front grilles, normally a hyper silver finish, were painted body color on the upper and a satin gray on the lower while maintaining the chrome surround standard from Cadillac. This look was to explore the “tuner” look for the front end that is popular on some import sports cars as well as sport compacts. The rear fascia received a similar treatment to enhance the lines of the lower diffuser. And while at the rear of the vehicle, the exhaust tips and tail lamps are unique as well. The exhaust was inspired by vintage Italian sports cars and was actually sourced from a close relative of the CTS – Corvette. The current generation Chevrolet Corvette sports the twin tips spaced further apart, but seemed to be a perfect fit for the Coupe. The tail lamps began life as the European spec tail lamps for the standard Coupe, but are not a direct plug in for the US model. So the internals of the US model lamps were transplanted into the shell of the European model tail lamps, giving a clean finish to the rear of the car.

Vehicle personalization is an integral part of what the Dimmitt Automotive Group has stood for in the Tampa Bay area, and this 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe is another shining example of what is possible in the automotive market place. Hopefully whoever decides to make this vehicle their own will enjoy owning it as much as we have enjoyed building it!

2013 Cadillac XTS Finally Gets A Name

CAR & DRIVER - AUGUST 2011

Cadillac has confirmed that it will introduce a new large luxury sedan in spring of 2012, a car that was previewed at the 2010 Detroit auto show by the XTS Platinum concept. Now we have learned that said flagship sedan will have a name, also previewed by the XTS Platinum concept (sans the Platinum and concept parts). There had been some thought that the XTS might be dubbed ETS for production, but GM apparently doesn’t believe ETS fits the big car as well as XTS.

Another term GM is not assigning to this car is the word “flagship.” Despite its larger-than-CTS size, the XTS will not go after the Mercedes-Benz S-class, Lexus LS and the like (Cadillac has plans for a proper rear-wheel-drive flagship for 2014 or 2015). Rather, the XTS will shamelessly target traditional Cadillac buyers, mainly aging boomers (i.e.: those who, unlike us, miss the old front-wheel-drive DTS) and probably a few livery operators as well. But these traditional buyers will have to adapt to a decidedly non-traditional interior. As we noted when we published spy photos of the XTS earlier this year, the XTS’s dashboard will be devoid of traditional switchgear and rely heavily on capacitive-touch controls, much like the Chevrolet Volt and Lincoln MKX. Buyers also will have to be content with the XTS’s planned V-6 and possible hybrid powertrains.

We predict the XTS’s packaging will sell well here, although an even more important market for the XTS is China. Given that country’s proclivities toward glitzy grilles and high-tech luxury, there’s a good chance that the XTS finds its largest market in Asia.

REVIEW - 2012 Cadillac SRX

BY TONY QUIROGA - Car & Driver

The Cadillac SRX’s lead development engineer, Steve Kline, kicked off the debut of the 2012 Cadillac SRX by telling us, “If we’d told you back in 2009 that the SRX would move from number nine in the segment to number two behind the Lexus RX, you probably would have laughed.” Kline is right. C/D loved the previous, CTS-based SRX. Its rear-drive dynamics and interior packaging allowed it to win a comparison test and multiple 5Best Truck trophies but failed to endear it to customers. We would not have believed that a front-drive-based SRX would rocket up the sales charts, but that’s exactly what has happened.
For 2012, the SRX gets a major powertrain upgrade that might grow sales even further. The standard 265-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 is dead. New customers should be relieved that they won’t have to spin their engine all the way to 5100 rpm just to access a limp 223 lb-ft of torque. Likewise, the 3.0-liter will be relieved that it has been relieved of the SRX’s 4500-pound curb weight. Cadillac stopped offering the SRX’s previously optional engine, a turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6, earlier this year. Few mourned the loss of the 300-hp, single-turbo six. Its eulogy was probably filled with references to turbo lag, nonlinear power delivery, and the engine’s Saab origins.

When Two Become One
Replacing those two engines is a single 3.6-liter V-6. “This is the engine the SRX should have had all along,” said an engineer who didn’t wish to be named. The engine is similar to the 3.6-liter V-6 found in the CTS, but it’s adapted and tweaked for the SRX’s transverse arrangement. A few of the changes—like the clever exhaust manifolds integrated into the heads, the plastic intake manifold, and lighter connecting rods—help shave 20 pounds off the 3.6-liter V-6. Lightening the connecting rods allows the engine to rev a bit higher, and the higher revs lead to 308 hp at 6800 rpm. Other changes, like additional sound deadening in the firewall and a clever rubber-isolated high-pressure fuel line, keep engine noises out of the cabin. Putting rubber between the fuel line and engine nearly eliminates the injector ticking sound we’ve come to expect from direct-injection engines at idle.

The six-speed automatic carries over from the previous 3.0-liter V-6, but its computer has undergone a thorough reeducation. In normal mode, the transmission upshifts and downshifts predictably. Moving the shifter to the left accesses sport mode. In sport, the transmission holds gears longer, downshifts earlier, and resists moving into the top gears. Manual control is available, should you find that sport mode isn’t to your liking, but we found it to work remarkably well on the canyon roads northeast of Santa Barbara, California. A fourth transmission mode is accessed by a button marked “eco” that sits next to the shifter. Select eco, and the transmission switches to a fuel-conscious algorithm that seeks to upshift early and resists downshifts (eco mode also decreases throttle sensitivity, but we were hard pressed to notice a difference). Cadillac claims a 1-mpg boost is possible in eco mode. According to the EPA, a front-drive SRX will achieve 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway, which is one worse in each test than the 2011 model’s 3.0-liter and one of few downsides to this engine swap. All-wheel-drive versions come in at 16/23, which is down one in the city cycle compared with the 3.0-liter. Compared with the turbo V-6, the 3.6-liter improves by 1 mpg in the city and highway cycles, plus the new V-6 doesn’t require premium fuel as did last year’s turbo.

With 265 pound-feet of torque available from 2400 rpm, the 3.6-liter doesn’t have to work nearly as hard as the 3.0-liter to move the SRX from a stop. The torque curve is nearly flat from 2400 rpm to 5300 rpm, which makes for smooth, uninterrupted acceleration. We expect the new engine will match—or nearly match—the turbo V-6’s 7.2-second 0-to-60 time. Even when whipped up to its 6800-rpm power peak, the V-6 remains refined and pleasant. There’s an appropriate amount of intake snarling and exhaust rush. The unending strain of the 3.0-liter is gone.

Other changes to the SRX are minor. The cargo area gets a configurable rail system similar to the one found in Mercedes-Benz products, the lock switches have migrated to the doors to combat JD Power complaints related to the center-console mounted lock/unlock switch—although a redundant switch remains on the center console—a heated steering wheel comes in all but the base trim level, Bluetooth is standard on all trim levels, and there’s a new 20-inch wheel design, as well as a new ebony interior color that has contrasting white stitching on the seats and dashboard. The razor-studded-potato exterior of the SRX remains unchanged.
Two suspension setups are available. Most versions will come with the base FE2 arrangement that has twin-tube shocks and smaller anti-roll bars than the sportier FE3 chassis. FE3-equipped SRXs get active shocks that adjust stiffness according to vehicle speed, load, steering input, and road condition; variable-assist steering that tightens up at speed; and 20-inch wheels and accompanying slimmer tire sidewalls. Slipping the transmission into sport mode also puts the shocks into a sportier and stiffer mode. Both suspensions have the same spring rates. Although roll control is slightly better with the FE3 suspension, there isn’t a huge gain in sporty feel or handling, and we’d be hard pressed to pay extra for it. Either way, the SRX makes the Lexus RX feel like a sloppy mess.

Dimmitt Cadillac - Classic Luxury, Timeless Style

Written by Amy Paterson

For decades the Cadillac brand has been famous for its fine, luxury vehicles. So famous in fact that a major recording label, Cadillac Records, was so named because its founder Leonard Chess had a habit of buying all of his musicians (and himself) a Cadillac. Songs paying tribute to the icon have played on our radios for generations, and one of Cadillac’s biggest fans was the King of Rock-n-Roll himself, Mr. Elvis Presley. Elvis owned many Cadillac cars during his reign—the first being his world-renowned pink and white 1954 Cadillac—and was known for giving them as gifts. Throughout the years, many things have changed, but one thing that remains the same is Cadillac’s signature luxury style, partnered with dependable, quality vehicles and superb service. If Elvis were around today, I imagine he’d still drive a Cadillac. I picture him in the new Cadillac CTS Coupe, custom-finished in gold, of course.

Providing our community with 87 years of Cadillac sales and service is the Dimmitt family of Clearwater, Florida. The Dimmitt legacy began in Clearwater in 1924 when Larry Dimmitt, Sr. purchased a Ford dealership where he handled sales of Ford and Lincoln until 1933 when he began handling sales and servicing of Cadillac, Chevrolet, and LaSalle. In 1952, Larry Dimmitt, Jr. took over from his father, and then in 1972, Lawrence Dimmitt III followed family tradition and took over for Dimmitt, Jr. It was in 1976 that Richard Roth Dimmitt (currently the sole owner) became co-owner with his brother Lawrence and dealer/operator of the Cadillac dealership. In 1986, Dimmitt Cadillac relocated from its original location in downtown Clearwater on Ft. Harrison to its current location on US Hwy 19 in Countryside, now a local landmark, referred to as ‘The Mansion.’ Richard Dimmitt became the sole owner of Dimmitt Automotive Group in 1993. Today, Dimmitt Cadillac specializes in sales and service of Cadillac, Land Rover, and Saab. The family legacy continues as Mr. Dimmitt prepares his sons, Peter and Richard, Jr., to become the fourth generation of owners in the Dimmitt family.

Family is an important part of Dimmitt Automotive Group and extends beyond the boundaries of blood. The entire staff of Dimmitt Cadillac work as a family. I experienced this first-hand when I was given a tour of the property by Dimmitt’s Community Relations Director, Kelli Krebes. In every area, from the sales floor to the service department, everyone I met was proud to tell me how they came to Dimmitt. Many of Dimmitt’s employees have worked there for decades.

“It is a pleasure to work for a family committed to our community,” says Kelli. “One family, partnered with a professional staff dedicated to ensure your complete satisfaction can make a difference.”

The service department plays a huge part in the Dimmitt Cadillac legacy and specializes in providing quality service to any model and make of vehicle. The dealership used to handle sales of Hummer, and will continue to specialize in servicing Hummer vehicles. Dimmitt Cadillac’s service department is legendary for excellence in service, and just like the sales department, caters to customers’ needs, whether it is relaxing in one of the lounge areas, having a quiet place to catch up on emails, or getting chauffeured to a destination. And, there are always fresh baked goods, delicious coffee and refreshments available.

When mishaps happen and your car needs paint and body work, you are in good hands at Dimmitt Cadillac’s state of the art Collision Center.  Adhering to the “Cadillac Standard” in customer service and quality work, Dimmitt Collision Center repairs all makes and models, accepting all insurances.

The Dimmitt family takes pride in our community, and has continuously contributed to local organizations throughout the years. Dimmitt Automotive Group has sponsored many charities and non-profits, as well as private dimmitschools. Local organizations that have Dimmitt’s ongoing support include: Children’s Cancer Center, All Children's Hospital, Mike Alstott Family Foundation, Morton Plant Mease Foundation, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, The Run Neese Foundation, United Way of Tampa Bay, PARC, UPARC, Children's Home Society of Tampa Bay, Gulf Coast Division, American Cancer Society - Pinellas County Unit, Boys and Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, Salvation Army, Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, Red Cross Disaster Relief, Toys for Tots, The Haven of RCS, East Lake Youth Sports Complex, Clearwater Little League, and East Lake Little League.

Dimmitt is proud to announce their recent partnering with Ruth Eckerd Hall. The pair is very excited about future endeavors together. Richard Dimmitt commented, “The partnership between Dimmitt and Ruth Eckerd Hall is a great way to help drive the economy while supporting the arts and arts education in our community!”

The Ruth Eckerd Hall-Dimmitt Automotive Group partnership is offering new vehicle buyers a complimentary six-month Dress Circle membership. As a Dress Circle member, you are entitled to an array of privileges such as ticket purchasing before the general public, private concierges phone line service for ticket purchasing, access to the exclusive Hoffman Dress Circle lounge with complimentary champagne, wine and soft drinks. Dress Circle members enjoy exclusive VIP Experiences such as Meet and Greets, backstage tours and other up-close and personal experiences at Ruth Eckerd Hall. My sister and I were able to experience the Dress Circle firsthand, as Kelli was kind enough to invite us to attend the Kenny G. concert. We had VIP parking, free beverages and hors d’oeuvres, and a fantastic show!
